Drought-proofing Zimbabwe’s livestock: Practical Strategies for farmers in an era of recurring El Niño

ZIMBABWE’S livestock sector continues to face increasing pressure from the growing frequency and intensity of El Niño-induced droughts.

Across many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, climate variability has become the new normal, bringing prolonged dry spells, poor pasture regeneration, shrinking water sources and declining livestock productivity.

For Zimbabwean farmers, particularly those who depend on cattle as a source of wealth, draught power, income and social security, recurrent droughts pose a significant threat to livelihoods.

The devastating effects of recent drought seasons have demonstrated that traditional livestock management practices are no longer sufficient on their own. Farmers must adopt proactive and innovative measures to protect their herds from drought-related losses. The key to survival lies in preparedness rather than reaction.

One of the most effective drought mitigation strategies is the preservation of feed resources during seasons of abundance. Farmers should take advantage of good rainfall years to harvest and store surplus forage through hay baling.

Natural grasses, improved pasture species and crop by-products can be converted into hay and stored for use during periods of feed scarcity. Hay production not only preserves nutrients but also provides a reliable feed reserve when grazing lands are depleted.

Fodder production is another important intervention. Farmers can deliberately cultivate drought-tolerant fodder crops such as velvet bean, lablab, cowpeas, sorghum and forage legumes. These crops can be harvested and conserved as hay or silage ensuring a continuous supply of quality feed throughout the dry season.

Crop residues also remain an underutilised resource in many farming communities. Maize stover, sorghum stalks, groundnut haulms and sunflower residues can be collected, treated where necessary, and stored for livestock feeding.

Proper storage helps maintain their nutritional value and reduces wastage.

Zimbabwe is also endowed with numerous non-timber forest products that can supplement livestock diets during drought periods. Pods from trees such as acacia species and other indigenous browse plants provide valuable nutrients when conventional pastures become scarce.

Farmers should identify and sustainably utilize these natural feed resources while ensuring conservation of the environment.

Beyond feed preservation, farmers must consider herd optimisation as a critical drought management strategy.

Maintaining livestock numbers that exceed the carrying capacity of available resources often results in severe losses during droughts.

Strategic culling of old, unproductive, sick or poorly performing animals reduces pressure on feed and water resources while generating income that can be invested in purchasing supplementary feeds or improving livestock infrastructure.

The use of commercial stockfeeds and feed supplements can also help bridge nutritional gaps during critical periods.

While these feeds may require financial investment, they often prove more economical than losing valuable animals to starvation. Strategic supplementation is particularly important for breeding stock, draught animals and young growing animals.

Water management is equally important. Farmers should invest in water harvesting, rehabilitation of water points and storage facilities where possible. Adequate water availability improves feed utilization and supports animal health during periods of extreme heat.

Another often overlooked strategy is the temporary suspension of reproduction. During severe drought conditions, farmers may reduce breeding activities by separating breeding males from females. This prevents pregnancies that would increase nutritional demands on already stressed animals. Calving during periods of feed shortage often leads to poor calf survival rates, reduced milk production and weakened breeding females. Resuming breeding when feed and water conditions improve helps maintain herd productivity while reducing losses.

Early warning information should also guide decision-making. Farmers are encouraged to closely monitor seasonal climate forecasts provided by the Meteorological Services Department and agricultural extension officers. Timely information allows farmers to plan feed reserves, adjust stocking rates and implement drought preparedness measures before conditions deteriorate.

As climate change continues to intensify weather extremes, resilience will become the defining characteristic of successful livestock enterprises. The future of livestock farming in Zimbabwe will depend not only on the size of a farmer’s herd but also on the ability to anticipate risks, conserve resources and adapt management practices.

Droughts may be unavoidable, but catastrophic livestock losses are not. Through careful planning, feed conservation, strategic herd management and innovative adaptation measures, Zimbabwean farmers can safeguard their livestock assets and build more resilient farming systems for generations to come.
