The David Livingstone Primary School pupil who drowned in the school’s swimming pool on Wednesday was laid to rest yesterday at Granville Cemetery in Harare. Mufaro Matemba was eight-years-old.
The burial was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the school’s headmaster Mr Milton Ndhela, members of the school’s committee and heads from different schools.
In an interview after the burial, Mr Trust Muza, the Matemba family spokesperson, said he was impressed by the support they got from Government.
“We appreciate the assistance we got from the ministry, especially in terms of transport,” he said.
“They gave us about four buses from different schools.
“It is also commendable that local schools cooperate with each other in the event that the other school has been involved in an incident like this.”
Mr Muza said the pain was unbearable as Mufaro had left a huge void that no one could fill.
“There is no amount they can give us that will amount to the value of that boy, but we just wish if schools can change in the way they run their day to day activities, especially in terms of security,” he said.
Mr Muza said the post-mortem revealed that Mufaro died from asphyxiation.
Mufaro, who was in a special class, went missing at break time and his body was found by school authorities and relatives around lunch time floating in the swimming pool.
