Over 30 000 children aged between one and 15 years are set to get treatment for bilharzia and soil-transmitted helminths (intestinal worms) in Nyanga District over the next six days.

The mass drug administration programme, which started on Monday, is expected to run until October 19.

Nyanga district medical officer Dr Majoni Muungani said seven wards with a high burden of intestinal worms and 23 wards burdened with bilharzia will be reached.

“We are targeting 26 258 children in the 23 wards for bilharzia and 8 634 children in seven wards for soil-transmitted helminth,” he said.

The programme is being rolled out in schools, clinics and hospitals, while five mobile teams are offering services in hard-to-reach areas.
