OLD MAGWEGWE residents were left wide awake on Monday night after a drunk driver smashed straight through a family’s precast wall.

The bumbling driver fled from the scene, only to crash into a pole less than a 100 metres away.
He seemed to be on a mission to hit anything that was not on the road, like he was compiling a scrapbook of “strange things to inexplicably crash into when driving.”

The chaos erupted around 11PM when Nokuthula Moyo and her two kids were deep in dreamland. A thunderous bang jolted them up.

“It sounded like a massive giant had collapsed in our yard,” she told the B-Metro. Shaking with fear, she thought robbers were trying their luck. She only stepped outside after hearing neighbours shouting.

What she found outside nearly sent her back indoors. Her “durawall” was crushed like cardboard right next to her children’s bedroom. The mystery driver was nowhere to be seen.

Neighbours followed telltale clanking noises echoing down the road and discovered the runaway car now wrapped around a pole like it was posing for a traffic safety poster. Behind the wheel was Mthulisi Ncube, the man of the moment.

When cornered, Mthulisi confessed he had bolted because he feared for his safety. Residents were not impressed.
After a quick grilling he promised to fix every crack of the damage and was hauled off to the police station to write an official report and sign papers to rebuild the wall he had destroyed.

Still shaken but grateful, Moyo said: “I can’t imagine what would have happened to my kids if it had gone further.”
She urged drivers to ditch the bottles when grabbing their keys this festive season. “Let’s celebrate responsibly so everyone makes it home safe,” she said.
