DStv subscribers are set for a major shake-up next week, with MultiChoice introducing a revamped package line-up that promises to change how Zimbabweans access their favourite sport, movies and television series.
The new packages, which launch on Thursday, November 5, mark one of Multichoice’s most significant product developments in years, with a fresh focus on affordability, specialised viewing options and greater access to popular channels.
At the heart of the changes is a new strategy that separates entertainment from sport, allowing subscribers to choose packages that better reflect their viewing habits rather than paying for a broad mix of content they may not necessarily watch.
For football lovers, movie enthusiasts and families seeking more entertainment options, the changes could reshape the DStv experience.
MultiChoice Zimbabwe country chief executive, Edwina Korir, said the revamp was driven by a desire to improve customer enjoyment while making the platform’s content offering more accessible.
“DStv’s strength is its combination of local, African entertainment, international content and unrivalled live sport in one place,” she said.
“We’ve reimagined our packages to better reflect how customers watch today, with tailored options specifically for general entertainment and sports fans.”
Under the new structure, DStv Access becomes DStv Starter, adding 10 channels to its predecessor’s offering.
The entry-level package will introduce viewers to SuperSport KICKOFF and Wethu+, two additions that could prove particularly attractive to subscribers seeking more football and African entertainment without moving to higher-priced tiers.
SuperSport KICKOFF will carry selected football from major competitions, including the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League, while Wethu+ brings regional and international series previously associated with higher-tier offerings, including Mzansi Magic and M-Net.
The move is significant in a market where access to premium entertainment and international football remains an important consideration for pay-TV customers.
DStv Family will be rebranded DStv Select, retaining its broad appeal to households through a combination of movie channels, local and international series, selected football, other sporting action and children’s programming.
However, the biggest structural change comes with the splitting of DStv Compact into two distinct packages.
The new DStv Movies & Series will target viewers who prefer films and television drama, bringing together channels such as M-Net, the movie channels, Discovery Channel and BBC Earth.
The package will also feature an updated movie offering through M-Net Movies+, M-Net Stars and M-Net Legends, promising more blockbusters, faster access to new releases and fewer repeats.
Meanwhile, DStv Sports becomes the first package in the line-up specifically designed for sports enthusiasts.
With 17 sports channels, it will offer every English Premier League and UEFA Champions League match, alongside cricket previously available only on DStv Premium, selected international club rugby, WWE and UFC.
