WHILE the general feeling among football commentators has been that the two should have reached some form of agreement, aspiring national Zifa vice presidency candidate, Elkanah Dube, believes his battle for the post with another Bulawayo candidate Omega Sibanda should be viewed as a victory before the elections.
The two former Highlanders executive members will go head to head in a bid to deputise whoever will win the Zifa presidency among the four candidates during the March 29 plebiscite. The winner will take over from another former Bosso administrator Ndumiso Gumede who has already said he is not seeking re-election.
“Personally I feel whoever will get the post between me and Sibanda will be deserving. It doesn’t worry me a bit that we are facing each other in the election, in fact it’s a healthy set-up especially for Bulawayo because so far, it’s the only post that is confirmed to be coming to Bulawayo even before ballots are cast,” said the veteran educationist with well over three decades of sports management experience, 17 of which he has spent in football.
Dube, a principal at Hillside Teachers’ College in the city said he aims to promote the image and credibility of Zifa in the eyes of world football and that will be done through good governance practices.
“I also intend to strengthen our relationships with regional and international football bodies like Cosafa, Caf and indeed Fifa. The performance of all our football national teams in my bid to identify and implement strategies to enhance performance will be key during my term of office,” said Dube, a former Highlanders secretary and vice chairman. He now sits on the Highlanders board.
There has been a lack of attention to various national teams with the administration concentrating on the Warriors even to an extent of choosing to have the junior national teams banned by Caf for failure to fulfil matches.
“Personal values in sync with the philosophy of fair play and equal treatment to all is expounded in the ethics of all football bodies hence the electorate should vote for the unity of purpose and building of bridges towards a greater football performance in Zimbabwe,” said Dube.
Please note that tomorrow we speak to another vice presidency candidate Omega Sibanda
