Students at tertiary institutions should transition from a job-seeking mindset to job creation, the Public Service Commission (PSC) has said.
In a public lecture at the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) held early this week, PSC Commissioner Dr Millicent Mombeshora emphasised the importance of embracing innovation and self-employment for economic advancement.
The engaging lecture was aimed at igniting innovation and entrepreneurship among university students, equipping them with the tools they need to shape their future.
“The future of public service is undeniably digital. As technology evolves, so must our institutions, becoming more responsive and data-driven. Furthermore, the future workforce will thrive on an entrepreneurial spirit characterised by creativity, adaptability and a readiness to challenge outdated systems,” she said.
“National development relies heavily on merging these forces: a tech-savvy public service that harnesses entrepreneurial thinking to tackle complex challenges, enhance service delivery and foster sustainable value for all.
“It is at this crucial intersection that transformative leaders will emerge, steering Zimbabwe towards a resilient and prosperous future.”
CUT Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Taurai Bere said the initiative is crucial for students, especially with the integration of innovation hubs in higher education.
“The message resonates strongly — graduates should utilise their academic knowledge to devise solutions that meet community needs while simultaneously creating employment opportunities,” he said.
Students who spoke to Zimpapers after the lecture lauded the PSC for an insightful event.
“This lecture was enlightening. I have always dreamed of starting a business in renewable energy and now I feel more inspired and confident in pursuing it,” said Mellisa Chigwida, a second-year student.
Another student said the lecture revealed the difficult truth about universities producing more graduates than the job market can absorb.
“It’s up to us to embrace emerging technologies and leverage current structures to create our own opportunities.”
