ENGLISH county teams, Durham and Glamorgan got their Twenty20 campaigns off to a good start after being victorious by nine wickets and 57 runs over Northerns and Southerns respectively at Harare Sports Club yesterday.
The first match was between Southerns and Glamorgan where the latter scored 172/5 in their 20 overs before going on to bowl out their opponents for 115 runs in 17.2 overs for the win. In the afternoon match, Northerns were all out for 124 runs in 16.3 overs and Durham chased down the target in 11.3 overs to finish with 125/1.
Glamorgan opening batter, Sam Northeast top scored for the county side after he finished unbeaten on 76 runs from 49 deliveries. Captain, David Lloyd scored 31 runs off 24 balls while Callum Taylor finished with 27 runs to guide their team to a defendable total in 20 overs.
All-rounder, Luke Jongwe finished with the best bowling figures for the Zimbabwean side, taking two wickets in his four-over spell and giving away 33 runs. Fast bowler, Tanaka Chivanga also took two wickets in four overs as well for 45 runs. Leg spinner, Brandon Mavuta had one scalp in his spell.
Big-hitting Cephas Zhuwao top-scored for the Southerns with 23 runs off 18 balls while his opening partner, Innocent Kaia made 18 runs off 14 deliveries. The team’s third-leading run-getter in the match was young Johnathan Campbell who made 15 runs as they failed to chase down the target set by the English side. Daniel Douthwaite took three wickets for eight runs in 2, 2 overs while Jamie Mcllroy and Prem Sisodiya took two scalps each to guide their side across the finish line.
In the match between Durham and Northerns, the former dominated with both bat and ball to get the huge win. Tadiwanashe Marumani top scored for the Northerns with 24 runs from 16 balls while Carl Mumba finished with 22 runs from 14 deliveries as their team struggled to get going with the bat.
Liam Trevaskis finished with the figures of 3/19 in three overs for Durham whereas George Samuel Drissel, Oliver Gibson and Brandon Dale Glover took two wickets each for Durham to restrict their opponents to a reachable target.
The visitors only lost the wicket of Michael Alexander Jones for 35 runs off 15 deliveries as they easily chased down the target set. Alexander Zak Lees finished unbeaten with a half-centuryA on 55 runs from 31 balls while David Guy Bedingham scored 34 off 23 balls. Talent Dzikiti took the only wicket that fell.
Two matches will be played today as well with Durham facing Southerns whereas Glamorgan will be up against Northerns at Harare Sports Club. The Durham and Southerns match will be the first of the day. — @brandon_malvin
