TRADITIONAL music duo Dzibalemvula Ezomdabuko have earned their first-ever nomination at the Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAA) in the Outstanding Alternative Music category, marking a major milestone in their artistic journey.

The category is shaping up to be one of the most competitive at this year’s awards, featuring fast-rising artistes such as Ma9Nine, Asante Mo, Bhila, Black Diva, Matojeni Melo Maniacs, Abigail Mabuza and Bhekiwe.

Evias Bhebhe and Awakhiwe M Nkosi make up Dzibalemvula Ezomdabuko and have carved a niche by blending traditional African compositions with contemporary instrumentation, making ancestral music accessible to modern audiences.

“We’re nominated this year for our first nod in the BAA. This has always been our dream and we’re looking forward to winning. This means a lot to us and we’re grateful that at least someone up there is seeing our work,” said Bhebhe.

The duo’s music fuses ingoma zama khehla and zabogogo — traditional songs rooted in ancestral calls and spirituality — with modern rhythms, creating a distinctive sound that resonates widely.

“I believe our work has a big impact on the arts because our music is based on true African spirituality and ancestral spirit. If we win, we’ll appreciate it greatly as it means our dream is coming true,” added Bhebhe.

This nomination not only recognises their talent but also reinforces their mission to promote African traditional music and preserve cultural heritage while connecting with contemporary audiences. — @mthabisi_mthire
