Heroes Acre on Friday.
Cde Mhuru died at St Annes Hospital after succumbing to kidney failure. He was 65.
Speaking at the burial, Zanu-PF national consultative assembly member Cde Kennedy Chuma described Cde Mhuru as a dedicated cadre who immensely contributed to the liberation of the country.
He said Cde Mhuru was a hard worker who served the country and the party well.
“We have known this man (Cde Mhuru) as a dedicated and committed cadre who fought for the freedom we are enjoying today,” he said. “He always toiled for the progressive development of the party, based on a true revolutionary spirit. Indeed this is a great loss not only to the people of Harare but to the nation at large as he was a loving father who always gave advice to all members of the party.”
Cde Chuma said the void left by Cde Mhuru would be difficult to fill. He urged mourners, especially youths, to emulate the works of people like Cde Mhuru. “We will never have a man like him. You can also be heroes if you work for your country and know how to protect it at all cost,” he said.
Harare province war veterans’ chairperson Cde Eliphas Chitera urged Zimbabweans to stand firm against the illegal sanctions imposed on the country by Britain and its Western allies.
“Look what these Western countries have done in Africa. They want to get access to our land hence the imposition of sanctions. We declare that we are a sovereign State and we shall not surrender our resources in any way,” he said.
Born in Gutu in 1946, Cde Mhuru did his primary education at Chivasa and Albeit Mission. He completed his secondary education at Mpopoma School in Bulawayo before proceeding to Morgenster College in 1966.
