WINS by St George’s College, Prince Edward and Eaglesvale in the main game lit up Day Four of the Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival at Prince Edward yesterday.
For the greater part of the festival, since the opening day on Monday, there were a lot of one-sided affairs but the tone, mood and character of the event changed yesterday, a high spectator turnout capping it all.
St George’s beat Namibia side Windhoek Technical 12-5, Prince Edward made light work of determined St John’s College while Churchill lost 10-17 to Eaglesvale.
The day belonged to Cyprian Mandenge’s Eaglesvale who beat the Bulldogs with all three tries coming from counter attacks while Vale had a watertight defence that stood strong, especially towards the end of the game.
Dragons coach Brandon Brider, however, expected more from his charges despite winning against the Namibians.
“It is always good to win, but the performance is not exactly what we wanted, the guys won because we always play the game to win. I think it’s always good to have tough competition, we have three tough games — Kyle first, Windhoek and Churchill on Saturday.
“The hardest of them all is against Churchill on Saturday as we know Churchill, Prince Edward and it’s nice to have some tough competition, especially having not toured this year.
“I think our win today was because of attitude, it was not about any changes because I think the guys learnt from their mistakes against Kyle, it was one of the things we chatted about off the pitch.
“Saturday is going to be tough for me because I feel that Prince Edward and Churchill are the best sides this year and we are playing Churchill and it’s going to be a very, very hard game.
“Our biggest target is to produce big players who can play for Zimbabwe or outside Zimbabwe so that if they leave the country and play abroad they will be of the highest quality.”
