A local foundation this week gave early Christmas presents to 50 children living with disabilities in Dzivaresekwa who received food hampers as part of a social responsibility programme.
The Andrew Makahamadze Foundation (AMF) gave groceries to children housed at Ramangwana Ravo Trust in the high density suburb. The children’s trust, headquartered in Harare, has branches throughout the country with most of them concentrated in Harare and Bulawayo and mainly houses people living with autism and cerebral palsy.
Speaking after the distribution of groceries, AMF chairman and Zanu PF member Cde Andrew Makahamadze said the donation was part of their thrust to ensure that the disadvantaged members of the community also enjoyed the festive season.
Cde Makahamadze, who was accompanied by his wife Anne, said this part of the foundation’s social responsibility programme under which they donated goodies to the less privileged annually, especially during the festive season.
“Last December, we managed to distribute food hampers to institutions which house people living with disabilities for them to feel they are part of the community and are recognised,” said Cde Makahamadze.
“As per norm, we donate annually to orphans and other vulnerable children. Over the past years, we have been working with institutions like Ruvimbo Special School where we constructed a greenhouse to embrace food and nutrition. We mobilise food items and other basics for them,” he said.
“It is these little deeds that put smiles on these kids’ faces. They need to be loved and have the feeling that they are part of the society despite the predicaments they face.”
AMF is also an organ of Southerton Constituency Development Trust and seeks to contribute to the development and empowerment of young people in marginalised communities.
Cde Makahamadze pledged to render support to the disadvantaged and vulnerable whenever the need arose.
“I grew up poor and I know how it feels to get a helping hand. We shall ensure that every time of need, we shall mobilise groceries every year to ensure that they are catered for.
Speaking after receiving the donation, Ramangwana Ravo Trust founder, Minister Sylvia Marowa paid tribute to the foundation saying: “We feel so humbled by such a gesture which is coming at a time when we are going into the festive season. We now have food and our children now feel loved.”
Ramangwana Ravo Trust head coordinator Mrs Shumirai Masakara added: “I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Andrew Makahamadze Foundation for coming to our rescue as a trust,” she said.
