Female inmates at Chikurubi Maximum Prison recently got an early Christmas present after Child Educate Trust and Domboview Adventures donated received clothes, shoes, sanitary wear and children’s clothing.
Both organisations are not-for-profit.
The donation is expected to go a long way in boosting the livelihoods of inmates.
Handing over the donation, Child Educate Trust founder, Pastor Dorcas Kubiku, said the gesture was meant to complement Government efforts towards the welfare of inmates.
“We care much about your welfare and have committed to help you sustain your lives. It is the love that brought us here and we feel that we need to care for each other, even the young ones,” she said.
“Being in prison does not mean your life has ended but you should have hope that there is life after this.
“We hope the clothes we have provided will go a long way in protecting you and the children. I know you are mothers and you can do it.”
She urged women inmates to continue taking care of their children while in prison.
The inmates said they were happy to note that some people still care about them despite being in jail.
Some inmates said they had been neglected by relatives for having been jailed over theft and other crimes.
In his remarks, Domboview media and communications manager Mr Charles Sande supporting female inmates was important.
“We have seen it fit to help female prisoners and us as a company we aim to extend our help in revamping the society in many ways.
“We hope the donations will go a long way in sustaining both children and their mothers,” he said.
