WOMEN in Theatre (WIT) will have an early Intwasa Arts Festival performance of their play Mothers as the actresses prepare to attend another festival in South Africa.WIT actresses Sarah Mpofu-Sibanda and Musa Sibanda, who star in Mothers, are expected to represent WIT at the Cape Town fringe festival from September 25 to October 5. They will now perform at Bulawayo Theatre today instead of their initial September 25 slot as the two festivals are clashing.
Nhimbe Trust communications manager, Ronald Moyo said: “The performance has been shifted from its previous Intwasa Arts Festival date of September 25 to accommodate the WIT’s partnership with the Performing Arts Network of South Africa’s (PANSA) Taxi Project, which features at the Cape Town fringe festival.”
The 30-minute play is a two-woman play that tells the story of Mira, a woman who gets caught up by her past when her husband impregnates their daughter, Bella, out of revenge. The truth unfolds as Bella tries to tell her mother that she is pregnant when in fact the mother has a bigger surprise in store.
“Mothers’ is full of unexpected twists and suspense that puts the audience on the edge of their seats. The play also has an alluring and unique set that immediately captures the audience’s attention even before it starts,” Moyo said.
The play was premiered by WIT at Amakhosi Plays on Sunday in April this year. The play, which was meant to tour different parts of the country, has put some of those plans on hold as the cast prepare for their South Africa performance. The new dates will be released today.
WIT is a programme of Nhimbe Trust which seeks to empower women in theatre by building their capacities in acting, scriptwriting, directing and producing.
