BULAWAYO’S third-oldest football club, Pumula East-based East Rovers, is today hosting a three-team Under-17 football tournament aimed at nurturing young talent in the city.
The tournament, bankrolled by Canada-based former East Rovers player Vusa Dube, will feature the hosts, FMSA and Toronto, with the winners set to walk away with a trophy and gold medals.
Outstanding players will also be rewarded with various individual prizes.
East Rovers chairman Madza Takawira said the annual tournament was part of the club’s efforts to provide a platform for young players to develop their talent.
“We are excited to host this tournament, which seeks to develop talent in Bulawayo. This is an annual event that we host as East Rovers, the third-oldest club in Bulawayo after Highlanders and Zimbabwe Saints,” said Takawira.
Dube said his motivation was to help young footballers from Pumula East realise their dreams while keeping them away from the streets.
“Besides these boys realising their dreams, the tournament in a way gets them out of the streets and provides a platform to be responsible citizens,” said Dube.
The tournament is expected to give the participating youngsters valuable competitive exposure while providing a platform for talented players to catch the eye of coaches and scouts.
