THE home of local motorsport — Donnybrook Park Raceway — will burst into life on Sunday, as the first round of the 2026 National Championships takes place on the Main Circuit.
With the support of Ezytrack Vehicle Tracking Systems, organisers Sables Motor Club have attracted a full field of Saloon and Sports cars, driven by Zimbabwe’s fastest motor racing drivers.
In fact, the 2026 main circuit racing season promises intense competition with returning champions, new faces, and teams aiming for podiums and wins.
Last year’s championship, held over 14 rounds in Harare and Bulawayo, produced a surprise A Class Saloon winner.
Des Morris has been “Mr Consistency” in his Nissan 370Z, finishing on the podium in every race, and he won the title over Toyota Supra veteran driver Richard “Mahobho” Robinson and Barney Roger’s BMW Turbo, ahead of the Bula-wayo pairing of Calvin Rademeyer and Aiden White.
The 2000cc Turbo Class has been dominated by Bulawayo drivers, with Angelo Tavares taking his Subaru to the title over Dylan Pragji’s Polo.
Usama Patel is the only Harare driver in the points, wedging his Toyota MR2 between the Matabeleland competitors. Bulawayo drivers also won the 2000cc class, with Quinton Holder ahead of Winston Jardine.
The biggest saloon class is the 1600cc Class, where 11 drivers scored points last year, including two of Zimbabwe’s fastest female drivers.
Declan Mellor won the title in his Toyota MR2 but fast rising female driver Catherine Zevgolis was always in the hunt for race wins.
Both promising young drivers have now left to pursue their studies outside of the country, so Zimbabwe’s most competitive class is now wide open.
Zane Shah, Neil Bruce and Chris Morris are all Toyota-powered on Sunday, as is Jamie Kerwin aboard her MR2, and can Vernon Lapham shake off his mechanical woes and return to the podium?
In the Sports Car Class, Eric Heard will make his first appearance for over a year aboard his Yamaha-powered Super 7, and will challenge the Olsen brothers, Carl and Brett, as well as Gary Kirk.
