TWO MEN have been arrested for allegedly faking EcoCash proof of payment to buy soft drinks valued at $125.
Israel Zondo (22) and Muziwakhe Tshuma (21) from Entumbane suburb allegedly duped Mr Craig Dube (19) to purchase Dragon and Pepsi drinks.
Zondo and Tshuma appeared before West Commonage magistrate Ms Tancy Dube facing fraud charges and were remanded in custody to today for commencement of trial.
Prosecuting, Mr Tapiwa Solani said the duo committed the offence on August 24 this year at around 9AM.
“Zondo and Tshuma went to African Sports Bar in Entumbane where they bought Dragon and Pepsi drinks with some edited EcoCash (proof of) transaction of $125 into the bar merchant code,” he said.
Mr Solani said the duo allegedly repeatedly used the trick to purchase goods using fake EcoCash messages.
The prosecutor said the matter came to light after they were caught while trying to dupe Tall Pairs Enterprises Private Limited Shop.
The shop manager then alerted Mr Dube about the two’s fraudulent conduct, the prosecutors said.
“On the 26th of August at around 10AM, Zondo and Tshuma tried to dupe Mr Dube again using edited fake Ecocash transaction of $50 but he had already been alerted by the manager at Tall Pairs Enterprises,” he said.
The matter was reported to police leading to the arrest of Zondo and Tshuma.
The value of the goods bought through fraudulent means was $125 and nothing was recovered. – @sharonbuwe
