ECONET Wireless Zimbabwe chief executive officer (CEO) Douglas Mboweni recently scooped a top international award for business leadership.Mboweni received the 2014 African Leadership Award from the African Leadership Magazine in conjunction with the CEO Club, a prestigious network of chief executive officers from around the world.
He received the award at a ceremony in Dubai last month.
Zimbabwe and Tanzania came in for “special mention” for entrepreneurship at the event.
Mboweni said Zimbabwe has a strong reputation as a breeding ground for entrepreneurship, which would continue as long as local businesses are encouraged to invest in their country.
“At Econet, we’ve invested more than one billion dollars into our economy. The impact of that investment is not only in allowing Econet to lead the local market, it has also made the world take notice of what Zimbabwe can achieve,” he said, adding the award was dedicated to Zimbabwe.
“I therefore do not see this award as a personal award, or even one for Econet. It’s in fact recognition for Zimbabwe as a whole,” he said.
The founder and chief executive officer of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Club Network, Ahmed Nizami said it was pivotal to appreciate hard work.
“As the club continues to grow and expand, it is crucial to recognise the achievements of leading businessmen in other parts of the world. Zimbabwe and Tanzania are countries that along with the rest on the African continent deserve special mention,” he said.
Nizami further stated that the CEO club’s main thrust was to promote business linkages among different countries.
“The role of the CEO Club Network is to showcase and assist local members get connected with overseas markets from a trade and business point of view. We hope to continue to make a positive impact both locally and globally,” he said.
