Econet Wireless Zimbabwe delivered a robust performance for the March quarter, buoyed by strong growth in data and voice usage across its mobile network operations (MNO) segment, reflecting the continued rise in demand for digital connectivity and financial inclusion solutions.

In a trading update, the company said: “The Mobile network operations (MNO) segment delivered robust growth compared to the same quarter last year, with data traffic more than doubling and voice volumes increasing by 44 percent, reflecting sustained demand for connectivity and the continued expansion of our digital ecosystem.”

The surge in usage points to the growing centrality of mobile internet in everyday life, from education and business to entertainment and social connectivity.

The sustained growth in data consumption, the firm noted, underscores the pivotal role of digital services in the future of Zimbabwe’s telecommunications landscape.

“The sustained growth in data consumption underscores the pivotal role of data services in the future of the telecommunications sector, presenting significant untapped opportunities for long-term value creation.”
Looking ahead, the company remains upbeat about prospects in the mobile segment:

“In the MNO segment, continued growth in data consumption, supported by an expanding subscriber base and optimised pricing models, is expected to drive sustained revenue and margin expansion.”

Zimbabwe’s telecommunications sector has been on a growth path, with players increasing investment in infrastructure to meet rising consumer demand.

According to the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), data usage has been on a steady upward trajectory, buoyed by the proliferation of smartphones, e-learning, and mobile-based business applications.
