AN Econet employee stationed in Beitbridge was on Sunday evening killed while five others were seriously injured when the Toyota Mark 11 he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with a truck near Londa Hotel.

Innocent Chitungo, 30, had just left the hotel with five other women heading for Manica Transit Shed where they wanted to facilitate the importation of a vehicle from South Africa when the accident occurred.

Acting police spokesperson for Matabeleland South Province, Sergeant Thabani Mkhwanazi, confirmed the incident. He said the driver of the haulage truck escaped unhurt while the Toyota Mark 11 was damaged beyond repair.

“When Chitungo and five women left the hotel, they took a road leading to Manica Transit Shed. Their car encroached into the lane of an oncoming Scania truck. Indications are that both vehicles were speeding resulting in a head-on collision,” he said.

Sgt Mkhwanazi said all the people travelling in the Toyota Mark 11 were badly injured and rushed to Beitbridge District Hospital where Chitungo died on the following morning.

He said the other five injured passengers, Davirai Chineka, Teenager Mushamano, Patience Maya, Ntombizodwa Dembo and Faith Sikai are still admitted to the district hospital.

“They’re all in a stable condition. We want to urge motorists to always be cautious and that they must obey road traffic regulations so as to avoid the unnecessary loss of life,” said Sgt Mkhwanazi.
