THE Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ) has started prosecuting unregistered engineers and technicians with five having so far been forced to suspend operations for non-compliance. Under the Engineering Council Act Chapter 27:22 and Statutory Instrument 161 of 2010, any person or company practising engineering work or wishing to do the same in Zimbabwe, is required to register with ECZ. ECZ is a regulatory body established through an Act of Parliament to ensure that practising engineers and technicians in Zimbabwe are compliant with ethical standards of the profession.
ECZ chief executive officer Engineer Ben Rafemoyo would not be drawn into revealing the names of the engineering firms saying the matter was still pending at the courts and would only be able to reveal their names when judgment has been made.
“We have stopped five engineering firms from operating because of non-compliance with the Engineering Act. The matter has been taken to the courts and we will only be able to reveal their names once judgment on the matter has been made,” he said.
Early this year, ECZ said its main thrust will be hinged on carrying out surveillance tours of engineers’ sites to inspect their registration status.
The registration is aimed at promoting ethical standards within the engineering profession.
The Engineering Council Act empowers ECZ to institute disciplinary measures on members that operate outside the ethical standards of the profession.
The disciplinary action ranges from fine, suspension and de-registration from ECZ.
