ED brings energy, dance to Zanu-PF seminar

Yesterday, the imposing Zanu-PF Convention Centre in Gweru shed its usual quiet for a surge of energy as President Mnangagwa arrived to open the party’s Central Committee seminar.

Returning from the World Governments Summit in Dubai, where he had showcased Zimbabwe on a global platform, the President was met with fervent applause from 229 gathered members. Accompanied by First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, he was welcomed by senior officials, including Vice President Dr Kembo Mohadi.

Then, in a cherished tradition, President Mnangagwa set the seminar’s tone. Before taking his seat, he broke into his signature “Kutonga Kwaro” dance. The rhythmic flipping of his arms, met with roaring approval from the delegates, instantly transformed the gathering, infusing it with celebratory energy for the work ahead.

The President’s presence marked the official start of the high-level meeting, which is expected to deliberate on key issues affecting both the party and the nation. As First Secretary of Zanu-PF, his attendance underlined the importance attached to the seminar and the party’s continued focus on strengthening leadership and governance structures.

Adding to the excitement, the Zanu-PF Information Department played a video segment highlighting President Mnangagwa’s address at the Dubai summit, where he articulated Zimbabwe’s foreign policy outlook, economic priorities and sovereign stance in international affairs.

Located about 13 kilometres outside Gweru along the Mvuma Road, the Zanu-PF Convention Centre is itself a powerful symbol. Built at the instigation of President Mnangagwa — then Defence Minister — ahead of the party’s 2012 conference, the US$2 million facility was completed in a record three months.

Designed as a replica of the iconic Great Zimbabwe Monuments, the centre features circular structures inspired by the Great Enclosure, with brickwork mimicking ancient granite stone walls. Replicas of the famous Conical Tower dot the site — a hallmark of designs by the late national hero and renowned architect Dr Joel Biggie Matiza.

Beyond its political significance, the centre doubles as a tourist attraction and a multipurpose venue, boasting a 5 000-seater facility used for weddings, seminars, exhibitions and entertainment shows.

In his welcome remarks, Zanu-PF Midlands provincial chairperson Cde Edson Chiherenge told President Mnangagwa that the province was building on his legacy of infrastructure development.

“Your Excellency, we thank you for your leadership and for this convention centre. We are also constructing party offices in all eight districts of the province. Already, three have been completed in places like Kwekwe and Shurugwi,” said Cde Chiherenge. “

The seminar was also marked by flair and colour, as Central Committee members arrived dressed to impress in sharp suits, vibrant dresses and neatly tailored party regalia — giving the gathering the feel of a fashion showcase.

Central Committee member Cde Marufu Sithole said the architecture of the centre complemented the occasion.

“The stone carvings and traditional designs remind us of our heritage and add dignity to our meetings. Even the way members are dressed reflects the importance of this seminar,” he said.

Cde Bongani Rukanda, resplendent in a long pleated skirt and colourful blouse, said the First Lady had set a high standard.

“We were taught how to dress well by Amai Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa. We dress with dignity, like mature women. Even in cooking, we are now experts because of Amai’s Traditional Cooking Competition,” she said.

Zanu-PF Secretary-General Advocate Jacob Mudenda heaped praise on President Mnangagwa, describing him as a guiding force for both party and country.

“You are the light of our party, you are the light of our Government. You are the light towards the actualisation of 2030. With your guidance, we do not doubt that we shall succeed,” he said.

“Your leadership was demonstrated a few days ago. You demonstrated that you are our chief diplomat par excellence. You were the star. No head of state could outshine you in Dubai.”

The seminar is expected to continue focusing on party leadership, governance and national development, providing a platform for senior officials to engage, reflect and chart a way forward.
