EDITORIAL COMMENT: CHIVAYO EXCLUSIVE INTERVEW: A MASSIVE COUP FOR TRADITIONAL MEDIA

WICKNELL Chivayo’s exclusive interview on Capitalk 100.4FM was more than just another headline-grabbing appearance — it became a subtle but significant statement about the enduring power of traditional media in an age dominated by podcasts and digital platforms.

For years now, podcasts have been marketed as the future of conversation.  They promise long-form, unfiltered dialogue, often hosted by personalities who position themselves as more relatable and less constrained than mainstream journalists.

Yet, Chivayo’s Capitalk interview showed that when it comes to credibility, structure, and national impact, traditional media still holds a commanding advantage.

One of the clearest victories for traditional media in this case was editorial discipline.

Unlike many podcasts, which can drift into sensationalism or become overly sympathetic to their guests, Capitalk’s format ensured that the interview remained focused and balanced. The presenter Pathisani Sibanda asked direct questions, challenged certain narratives, and maintained a professional tone throughout.

This is something that podcasts, especially those driven by clout or viral moments, often struggle to achieve.

The presence of trained journalists, even just as supporting staff, creates an environment where accountability was unavoidable.

Another key factor is reach. While podcasts appeal largely to niche, often younger, and internet-savvy audiences, radio stations like Capitalk command a broad and diverse listenership.

In Zimbabwe, radio remains one of the most accessible media platforms, cutting across economic and geographic barriers.

Chivayo’s message, therefore, was not confined to a select online audience—it reached commuters, workers, and families across the country.

That kind of penetration is something most podcasts can only dream of achieving. Credibility also played a huge role. Traditional media institutions have built trust over decades, and that trust cannot be replicated overnight by a podcast with a microphone and a trending host.

By choosing Capitalk, Chivayo effectively signalled that this was a moment that required seriousness and legitimacy.  Whether one agrees with him or not, the platform elevated the conversation from mere entertainment to a matter of public interest.

Had the same discussion taken place on a podcast, it might have been dismissed as just another attempt to trend. There is also the matter of structure and time discipline.

Radio interviews are tightly managed, forcing both the host and the guest to be concise and intentional.

Podcasts, while praised for their length, often suffer from lack of direction.

Important points get diluted in hours of rambling discussion. In contrast, the Capitalk interview delivered clarity within a limited timeframe, making it easier for audiences to grasp key issues without unnecessary filler. Importantly, traditional media also benefits from institutional accountability.  Stations like Capitalk operate under regulatory frameworks and professional standards. This means misinformation, defamation, or reckless commentary carries consequences.  Podcasts, on the other hand, often exist in loosely regulated spaces where anything can be said with minimal oversight. That difference matters, especially when dealing with influential figures like Chivayo.

This is not to say podcasts are irrelevant—they have their place, particularly in offering depth and alternative voices.

However, the Capitalk interview demonstrated that when it comes to shaping national conversations, traditional media still sets the agenda.
