Heroes and heroines of the Second Chimurenga War were guided by a code of conduct modelled on Chairman Mao tse Tung’s song, “Nzira DzeMasoja”, which is why war veterans are generally a well-behaved, respectful lot that operates within the strictures of that behavioural code.
The code was akin to a straitjacket that exposed rogue elements. And the Patron of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association is President Mugabe a man who has consistently walked the straight and narrow and thus fits not only that code, but even the stricter leadership one that was outlined by the Defence and Security Chiefs on January 9, 2002, when they described the Presidency of Zimbabwe as a straitjacket whose occupant must observe the objectives of the liberation struggle, if they were to stand in support of or salute him/her.
As such the utterances by renegade, ousted Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association chairman, Jabulani Sibanda, who basically claimed President Mugabe was launching a “bedroom coup’’ against VP Mujuru, in addition to threatening to march to State House ostensibly to meet the patron exposes Jabulani for the rogue element that he is. To this end, we support the action taken by the war veterans to boot him out of their organisation.
We are left wondering how Jabulani, a man who purports to lead an organisation of which President Mugabe is patron would think of taking to the streets to meet a patron he should be communicating with easily.
This leaves us to speculate, as we indeed now do that Jabulani’s proposed march to State House was meant to coincide with MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsavngirai’s planned street protests, all of which have sinister objectives.
And therein are the real national security threats, people who work to subvert the authority of a democratically elected President just one year into his five year term. It is not The Herald which Jabulani chose to dub a national security threat which has been working to undermine the President, but Jabulani Sibanda who went to the extent of defying a lawful instruction from the Minister of Home Affairs that a Government programme to bury the remains of liberation fighters found dumped in a mine shaft in Mutare be postponed to a date to be announced.
The national security threat is Jabulani Sibanda, who for some reason appears to believe he is a law unto himself, as exemplified by his announcement that he would not only defy the ministerial directive, but went on to announce Vice President Mujuru as successor to President Mugabe citing alleged historical precedent.
Jabulani has been vocal opposing the First Lady’s Meet the People Tours, which were bonafide party programmes, yet he has been going around the country holding clandestine meetings that had neither the blessing of the party nor the war veterans association he purported to lead.
Not only that, Jabulani went to the extent of challenging the decision of a constitutional organ of the party he claims to bear allegiance to when he described as “fraudulent’’ First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe’s elevation to lead the Women’s League, a decision that was endorsed by the Women’s League Conference, a constitutional organ of the ruling party.
So who is a security threat then?
A newspaper factually reporting on party programmes, or a man who not only opposes those party programmes, but defies Government instructions in addition to working to synchronising his actions with those of the aspiring to depose a lawfully elected government?
Food for thought Mr Jabulani Sibanda.
We find it hard to call you Comrade because your behaviour is not consistent with that of a disciplined, trained cadre.
