EDITORIAL COMMENT : Stop infanticide, save future generations

CHILDREN are gifts from God.

So special is this gift, it brings with it a sense of pride and royalty.

Some get them biologically while others adopt strangers.

There are, however, some who get them after years of prayer, fasting and despair.

All these efforts show that we all need children for the creation of future generations.

As they say, life should continue after our death and this can only be guaranteed by children.

Sadly, there are some who don’t value this precious gift from the Almighty.

This follows a surge in cases of backyard abortions and infanticide.

To say this trend stinks would be an understatement. Maybe, unacceptable is the right word to denounce these heinous acts.

In recent weeks, we have reported spine-chilling cases of infanticide where newly-born babies are found dead in illegal dumpsites, or cemeteries, in many suburbs.

The gory one being a recent Mabvuku case where a newly-born baby was found stashed in a plastic bag with the head and legs detached from its body. It was being pulled by dogs, reports say.

The other horrific incident involved a Glen View newly-born baby found dead with a part of the leg missing, at a dumpsite.

In recent weeks, police have recorded numerous cases of infanticide, which leaves one with many questions than answers.

What could be driving young mothers to commit such cases of infanticide?

Who is to blame and what’s the remedy?

Well, these are some of the questions that instantly come to mind each time such cases are reported.

These cases of mothers taking away their kids’ lives may be as a result of unwanted pregnancies.

In most cases, desperation, after getting pregnant, has resulted in young mothers killing their kids.

However, people should always indulge in unprotected sex when they are ready for responsibility.

Both parties should also take responsibility, especially the reckless bed-hoping men.

Our sisters deserve special love and counselling to ensure they won’t commit infanticide.

No matter the circumstances one gets pregnant, we should all value human life. Taking away an innocent soul is never a solution.

Instead of trying to get rid of the newly-born babies or terminating unwanted pregnancy, psychologically, it will come to haunt perpetrators.

Police chiefs, law experts and influential figures need to step up and raise awareness against infanticide and abortions.

This extreme emotional disturbance requires one to have counselling and support once they get unwanted pregnancies.

Calling people, who get unwanted pregnancies, with all sorts of names should come to end, since it has fuelled such cases of infanticide.

In short, in cases where those who commit infanticide, they should be prosecuted and slapped with stiffer penalties to send a message to would-be offenders.
