EDITORIAL: MARRIOT IS THE PROBLEM

DYNAMOS, the country’s biggest and most successful football club, are in serious trouble and they face the possibility of being relegated this year.

The Glamour Boys find themselves in relegation trouble, occupying the third relegation slot, after they lost 0-2 at Triangle, who are also struggling.

It was Triangle’s second league win in 11 matches.

Dynamos have won just once when they beat Simba Bhora at Rufaro and they are winless on the road.

The Harare giants have been toothless and have just scored once since the season started.

The other goal, in the 11 matches they have played, was an own goal by a TelOne player.

This is unacceptable, especially given that Dynamos have for a long time been associated with the best that Zimbabwe football can offer.

This is the team which was once led by George Shaya who was so good he won the Soccer Star of the Year award five times and is considered by some as the finest Zimbabwean footballer of all-time.

This is the same team which was once led by Moses Chunga, who became the natural heir to Shaya’s crown, and became the first infield player from Zimbabwe to make it to European football after Independence.

When Chunga left for Belgium, Dynamos continued to produce some excellent players who included the likes of Vitalis Taawira, Memory Mucherahowa and Tauya Murewa.

In 1998, Mucherahowa was the captain as Dynamos went all the way to the final of the CAF Champions League.

It’s the only time that a Zimbabwean club has featured in the final of this tournament.

Dynamos also produced some of the finest coaches to grace our fields.

They include Sunday Chidzambwa, who is the most successful Zimbabwean coach of all-time.

The late David Mandigora is the only other local coach to guide a team to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

Against such a background, it is disappointing that DeMbare find themselves struggling the way they are doing.

One of the main reasons they are struggling has to do with , who is the owner of the team after he took control following some questionable boardroom dealings. It’s not a coincidence that DeMbare’s challenges have coincided with Marriot taking control of the team and turning it into his private property.

Since he became board chairman in April 2014, Dynamos have won just one league championship which came in the year that he assumed control of the club.

That is a poor return for a club like the Glamour Boys.

Marriot’s response, whenever they face a crisis, has been to fire the coach.

This is what has happened to Lloyd “MaBlanyo” Chigowe.

While the coaches have come and gone, what has not changed is the way Marriot has been running the club and that is where the rot is.

This is what must be sorted out because anything else is just cosmetic.

Even if DeMbare get Pep Guardiola, with Marriot in charge, they will struggle and battle relegation.
