WHEN Aaron Chaka’s mother, Rose Makumbe, revealed her story, claiming she has a 45-year-old man who is the son of the late Oliver Mtukudzi, there was a lot of sympathy towards her.
We remain honoured that she chose us as the medium which could tell her story in the best way possible and ensure it reached as many people as possible.
We didn’t invite her to our newsroom, she came because she believed in us to tell her story as it is and that is exactly what we did.
We still remember it all — this woman who, despite now being 69-years-old, remains very beautiful one can tell that, in her younger years, she was a beauty queen.
She impressed all of us with her fine memory and how she was consistent with her story, never diverting from her narrative that, indeed, in her younger years, she had a romantic fling with the legendary Tuku.
We could tell it was coming from deep down her heart and she even claimed that one of Tuku’s hit songs, ‘Hazvireve Rudo Handina’, was written for her and her son.
Aaron took her case to the High Court recently trying to force the Registrar of Births and Deaths to change his identity particulars so that they read that his name is Aaron Mtukudzi.
However, the Registrar opposed that application and his argument was found to be credible by the High Court, dealing Aaron a setback in his quest to be acknowledged as Tuku’s son.
Justice Fatima Chakapamambo Maxwell sided with the Registrar.
All that he needs is to ensure he fulfils all the High Court requirements, including undergoing a paternity test, and returns to file another application.
After all, he has the backing of Godfrey Mukonowenzou Mtukudzi, the late Tuku’s younger brother, who says that Aaron is, indeed, his brother’s son.
What we don’t understand is why Aaron suddenly believes that he should be making some money out of his quest to be recognised as Tuku’s son.
That’s what he told us, when we approached him for a comment in the wake of the setback he suffered in the High Court, as he demanded to know how much we will pay him for the interview.
This is very sad because it casts him in a bad light and there will be many who will start to believe that his quest is just a pursuit for a cake of the Tuku estate.
He should never have put money into the process because it tarnishes his quest for recognition.
He is the one who needs to be engaging the media to tell his story and we don’t understand why we should be paying him for telling his story.
Aaron is messing up his case and soiling his image at a time when he requires the sympathy of many.
He should not portray himself as a gold digger but just as a child who wants to be united with his clan.
