Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Hwange
PRIMARY and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo has commended Hwange District for recording impressive results in public examinations, with Coalfields Primary School maintaining a 100 percent Grade Seven pass rate over the past decade.
Minister Moyo made the remarks today when he arrived at Coalfields Primary School for an interface with school heads from Matabeleland North province.
Coalfields Primary School headmistress Mrs Martha Zikhali told the Minister during a briefing that the school recorded a 100 percent pass rate in the Grade Seven examinations last year, maintaining a remarkable performance that has been sustained over the past decade.
Hwange District Schools Inspector Mr Lawrence Matshazi said the district, which has about 175 000 learners, recorded a 78 percent Grade Seven pass rate.
At secondary level, the district recorded a 34 percent pass rate at Ordinary Level, while the Advanced Level pass rate stood at an impressive 98 percent.
Minister Moyo applauded both Coalfields Primary School and Hwange District for their performance, saying the results demonstrated the commitment of teachers and school authorities towards improving learning outcomes.
“I want to applaud our host school, Coalfields, and indeed the district for these impressive pass records. Well done,” said Minister Moyo.
He also commended the school for implementing the Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) programme, which encourages learners to set aside time for reading as part of efforts to improve literacy and academic performance.
“I also want to congratulate this school for its Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) programme,” he said.
The Minister’s visit to Hwange forms part of his engagement with school heads across Matabeleland North, with the interface focusing on adherence to ministry regulations, school preparedness for public examinations and measures to improve the quality of education.
Hwange District has 196 schools, including 48 secondary schools, serving learners across the coal-mining district.
