CAIRO- Egyptian protesters threw Molotov cocktails at a government building in the port city of Suez on Wednesday, setting parts of it on fire, witnesses said, on the second day of nationwide anti-government protests.
Protesters also lobbed firebombs at the headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Party, amid heavy clashes between protesters and police, who tried to disperse the crowd with tear gas and rubber bullets, witnesses said.
At least 70 people — 55 protesters and 15 police — were injured in the clashes, medics said.
In demonstrations on Tuesday, three protesters were killed.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, addressing reporters in Washington, called for Egypt to seize “an important opportunity” for reform and also asked for an end to restrictions on social media such as Twitter and Facebook.
“We call on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from violence,” Clinton told reporters after talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.
The comments come after Obama in his big speech saluted the Tunisian protesters, saying: “The will of the people proved more powerful than the writ of a dictator.”- AFP
