CAIRO. — Cairo Criminal Court acquitted yesterday Ahmed Gaddaf al-Dam, former coordinator of Libyan-Egyptian relations, over charges of the attempted killing of two Egyptian policemen last March, state-run TV reported.Al-Dam, a cousin of Muammar Gaddafi who was pursued by Interpol over alleged crimes including counterfeiting, fraud and money laundering, was also charged of resisting the authorities and possession of unlicensed weapons.

He has opened fire against the policemen during the operation of chasing and arresting him, along with extradited former Libyan ambassador to Cairo Ali Mohamed al-Amin Maria and former Libyan finance official Mohamed Ibrahim Mansour.

Dam, holding with an Egyptian nationality, filed a lawsuit to stop all the prosecution procedures for his extradition, arguing the conditions in Libya in terms of courts and prisons were not safe.

Egypt and Libya have signed a legal and judicial memo to guarantee fair trial of extradited defendants. — Xinhua.
