Eight Ugandans smuggle alcohol in a coffin

Bungoma — Eight people of Ugandan origin have been charged in a Bungoma court after they were found in possession of illegal alcohol packed in a coffin. The eight accused persons including one woman appeared before Resident magistrate Linet Oleli.

The charge sheet stated that the accused persons were arrested on October 24 at the Malaba custom yard by Kenya Revenue Authority and security officers who suspected them of carrying contraband goods.

“The hawk-eyed officers arrested the eight suspects who had hidden the illegal alcohol in a coffin claiming that they were going to pick their dead relative in Nairobi,” read the charge sheet.

The accused persons were travelling from Mbale Uganda to Nairobi to collect the body of their relatives when they were caught. The prosecution told the court that when the coffin was opened they found the illegal alcohol stuffed in it.

The case will be mentioned on November 11. — AFP
