ZESA Holdings has switched Hwange Power Station’s Unit 3 back onto the national grid after completing a 44 day statutory maintenance programme, but immediately took Unit 8 offline for its own scheduled servicing.
In a statement, the utility said the refurbished unit is now fully fit for duty. “ZESA Holdings wishes to inform its valued stakeholders that Hwange Power Station Unit 3 has successfully completed its 44 day statutory maintenance programme.” The entity added that the unit “passed all statutory tests and has now been fully commissioned back onto the national grid.”
But even as one flame was reignited, another one went out.
“At the same time, Unit 8 has been taken off the grid for its annual Class B maintenance and is expected to be restored on 20 December 2025.”
To cushion the grid, the power producer is leaning on Unit 7, which remains active. “Hwange Unit 7 will remain operational, generating approximately 300MW to support the overall system stability.”
ZESA said Kariba Power Station is also stepping up to fill the gap. “Additionally, generation at Kariba Power Station has been increased to help offset the temporary reduction in supply caused by the Unit 8 outage,” reads the stakeholder relations update.
The power utility apologised for any inconvenience during the maintenance shuffle. “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that may arise during this period and appreciate your continued understanding and support as we work to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the national power supply.”
With festive season demand already creeping up, households will be hoping the grid holds steady as ZESA juggles its maintenance schedule.
