Eleven disciplines for Africa Youth Games

THE Zimbabwe Olympic Committee will be sending athletes from 11 sporting disciplines to Gaborone, Botswana for the second edition of the Africa Youth Games penciled for 22 May to 31 May.
The disciplines include aquatics, athletics, basketball (girls), golf, judo, karate, netball, rowing, rugby (boys), tennis and triathlon.

The youth teams’ manager Addison Chiware said all the teams were ready and the pre-departure camp dates have been set.

“We are going into a pre-departure camp on 19 May and we will leave the following day, this short camp is designed to minimise the time away from school since most of our athletes are public exam candidates who will also be readying themselves for mock exams,” he said.

Chiware said they had faith in the athletes given that some of them had already qualified for the Summer Youth Olympics to be held in Naijing, China, in August.

“Our prospects are high because some of our athletes in various disciplines have qualified for the China Youth Olympic Games. We hope they will use this event as a platform to further sharpen their skills,” said Chiware, disclosing that preparations for the AYG had begun in 2012 when they participated in National Associations games which were used for talent identification.
