THE stage is set for an electrifying showdown as some of the Southern Africa’s finest long-distance runners prepare to conquer the 2025 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon on July 6.
With prestige, prize money and personal redemption on the line, this year’s race promises high drama, fierce rivalries, and unforgettable moments against the breathtaking backdrop of one of the world’s natural wonders.
Leading the pack of returning champions is Ethel Pangiso, who has reigned supreme in the women’s full marathon (42.2km) since 2023.
Known for her endurance, strategic pacing and unshakable confidence, Pangiso is not mincing her words.
“I am 100 percent sure I will win again this year,” she said.
“I’ve trained harder, I’ve prepared smarter, and I know this course. I’m coming to make history.”
Pangiso’s dominance has made her a household name among Zimbabwe’s running elite and her preparation reflects a relentless pursuit of excellence. With two consecutive victories under her belt, she’s eyeing a third in what could be a defining moment for her legacy.
Meanwhile, Tendai Zimuto, who won the men’s full marathon last year, is taking a slightly different approach in 2025. While he won’t defend his 42km title directly, Zimuto will still be a force to reckon with in the 21km half marathon.
“I’m ready to defend my title, but I’ll be giving my best in the shorter race this time,” said Zimuto, who is reserving his energy for a major international marathon in Japan later this year.
Despite the change in race category, Zimuto’s presence is expected to elevate the level of competition in the half marathon. His name alone has already drawn buzz among fellow athletes and fans alike.
For Blessing Waison, the 2023 victor, this year’s marathon is personal. In 2024, a wrong turn during the race cost him a podium finish — an error he’s determined not to repeat.
“I’m coming to defend my title, and I won’t get lost again,” he declared.
With a clear strategy and a mission to reclaim his honour, Waison’s redemption arc adds an emotional charge to the competition.
Another formidable contender to watch is Moses Tarakinyu — a seasoned long-distance runner renowned for his unshakable discipline and remarkable consistency.
A back-to-back champion in the 21km race in 2022 and 2023, Tarakinyu ceded the title last year to Isaac Mpofu. But this year, he returns with renewed focus and a no-compromise mindset, determined to reclaim his crown.
“I’m ready for the marathon, and it’s a must for me to win,” he said.
“This isn’t just about running. It’s about proving to myself and my supporters that I still have what it takes.”
With that mindset, Tarakinyu is expected to be a major contender on race day, bringing experience and raw ambition to the field.
The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, now one of Africa’s top-rated races, continues to attract global attention. Beyond its athletic prestige, the event is a celebration of health, culture and tourism — drawing runners, families and spectators from around the world.
Sponsored by Zimbabwe’s leading telecommunications provider, Econet Wireless, the marathon has grown from a local race to a global spectacle that boosts Victoria Falls’ tourism economy and provides a platform for local talent to shine on the international stage.
With this year’s marathon expected to draw record crowds and participation, the return of these champions sets the tone for an unforgettable showdown.
