Zimbabwe’s top basketball clubs descend on Manicaland today for a thrilling three-day showdown as the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) National Club Championships kick off in Mutare.
The tournament, running until Sunday, will determine the best men’s and women’s teams in the country, and crown new national champions.
Action gets underway this afternoon at Mutare Boys High School and Mwenje Florida. Organised by BUZ, the event also carries high stakes, with the winners earning the right to represent Zimbabwe at the prestigious Africa Basketball League (BAL).
BUZ president Joe Mujuru underscored the importance of the competition and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to raising the standards of local basketball.
“As BUZ, we are raring to go. We are expecting to host an exciting and highly competitive tournament,” said Mujuru.
“We have clubs that excelled in their various provincial leagues taking part, this is essentially our local basketball champions’ league. The finals will be played on Sunday.
“The winners will go on to represent the country at a regional competition. We are looking forward to improved competition and a highly exciting tournament. We have also brought in referees from South Africa and Mozambique to ensure the officiating is of the highest standard,” Mujuru added.
This year’s championships feature top provincial league winners, including defending men’s champions Basket Hounds (Harare), along with strong contenders such as Marondera Lions (Mashonaland East), BUSE Panthers (Mashonaland Central), Victoria Falls Panthers (Matabeleland North), Mimosa Celtics (Midlands), Giants (Bulawayo) and D Knights (Manicaland).
In the women’s division, all eyes will be on UZ Sparks, the reigning champions from Harare, as they brace for tough competition from Kushinga (Mashonaland East), BUSE Panthers (Mashonaland Central), Wolves (Manicaland) and Bulawayo’s Lakers Mzansi, a dark horse many believe could cause a major upset.
The tournament promises a feast of fast-paced, high-stakes action, showcasing some of Zimbabwe’s young talent alongside seasoned veterans eager to etch their names into local basketball history. — @innocentskizoe
