ZIMBABWEAN heavyweight Elvis “Bomber” Moyo saw his night turn from a mission of revenge into a stunning defeat at EFC 127 in Johannesburg. His hopes of defending his title evaporated before he even threw a punch, a quiet loss on the scales followed by a decisive one in the cage.
Moyo, a veteran of the sport, was due to defend his Heavyweight Championship in one of the year’s most anticipated bouts. However, disaster struck just hours before the event when he missed weight by 800 grams, coming in just over the 265-pound limit. The EFC’s regulations are strict on champions making weight, and the organisation acted swiftly, stripping Moyo of his title immediately.
The fight’s dynamic shifted completely. What was supposed to be a title defence for Moyo became a last-ditch attempt to salvage his pride. His opponent, Matunga “HHH Power” Djikasa, was the only fighter eligible to claim the now-vacant belt. And claim it he did, stopping Moyo with a flurry of strikes in the second round to secure a TKO victory at 3:15 and become the new champion.
While Moyo showed the heart he’s known for, he entered the cage as a man already defeated, burdened by the psychological blow of losing his belt and a compromised training camp. He later admitted his preparation had been an issue. “
I tried to double down after I got sick two weeks back. I lost four days of training due to sickness, but I doubled down and knew I would be okay but I miscalculated. However, I will be back stronger,” he said.
That miscalculation proved to be a double whammy, costing him his title on the scales and the fight in the cage. The real story of the night, it turned out, was written before the main event even began.
