Small-scale farmers here have been advised to embrace modern farming methods that enhance sustainability and national economic development in the country.
Zaka District agriculture extension officer Mr Esau Mutuzungari said communal farmers should make use of Government agencies and non-governmental organisations to improve their agricultural skills.
He was speaking during a field day for small scale farmers that was held in the district recently.
“Communal farmers need to be equipped with knowledge to enhance profitability and sustainability in their initiatives,” said Mr Mutuzungari.
“They need to embrace modern farming technologies and adapt to climate change. It is critical to capacitate them so that they may improve the quality of their produce. This will improve the quality of their lives and contribute to economic growth.
“However, this can only become a reality when communal farmers actively participate in various support systems and consult various organisations, including NGOs.”
Mr Mutuzungari encouraged farmers to equip themselves with new farming methods that were environmentally friendly.
He commended the Zaka Super Seeds Company at Fuve-Panganai irrigation scheme for its intensive investment in research and seed development.
Mr Mutuzungari said the farmers should seek advice from relevant agencies when selecting seed varieties.
