Emmly George wins big at athletics awards

YOUNG tennis sensation Emmly George was the biggest winner at the Greens Supermarket sponsored Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC) awards ceremony on Friday night.

The 12-year old rising tennis star scooped the Junior Tennis Player of the Year and the biggest award of the night, the overall BAC Sportsperson of the Year. George, who has been an integral part of the club at a young age, thanked the leaders of BAC for creating the platform.
“Thank you to Greens for sponsoring this and thank you to all these people for creating this BAC community,” she said.
The home schooling George is a member of the Zimbabwe Under-12 and 14 player, ranked number one female in Under-12s in the country and has amassed a huge 146 medals of which 76 are gold at just the age of 12.

She also won gold for Zimbabwe at Africa Junior Championships (AJC) Zonals in Mozambique and silver AJC finals in the same country and another silver for Under-14s AJC Zonals in Harare earlier this year.
Among some of her achievements also includes winning all national tournaments in the country which she participated in, taking a total seven gold medals, including one for Matabeleland province at Under-12 level. She also won the Zimbabwe closed Under-12 championship last year.
The youngster was selected in the pool of most talented players in Africa last year with a participation of that recognition in Tunisia at the Africa Regional training centre and is also marked for a call up next year.

George was recently selected to represent Zimbabwe at AJC running from 15-22 March in Togo. The event will start off with warm up matches from 11-14 March and her family is appealing for sponsorship and support to help facilitate her trip to the tournament. Sadly, the family has to come up with US$2 500 for her to represent the country in Tunisia.
Other winners on the night were Wesley Vhovha who won the Tennis Open award having won a gold medal at the TESAZ Games as well as the ZITSU Games and was selected to represent Zimbabwe at the CUCSA Games in Malawi and won a gold medal in 2022.

George, who has been an integral part of the club at a young age, thanked the leaders of BAC for creating the platform.

Prosper Hikwa won the Tennis Veterans award as he is one of the best old-timers in the sport and loves the game and the club having displayed consistency.
Bornwall “Binya” Tafara won the Men’s volleyball award after leading the BAC team to second place in the Bulawayo League and also guided them to their debut National League appearance.
In Women’s volleyball, Andile Moyo was crowned the best as she was instrumental when she led the team to gold in the Bulawayo Volleyball League and also led the team to the quarter finals in the national volleyball league last year.

Lawyer Lozithelo Mpofu scooped the best Social Footballer award as he is one of those players who are always there when there is training and is one of the toughest within the team.
Taboka Manyalo won the Junior Cricketer accolade while for the seniors, the award went to Thamsanqa Nunu.
