POLICE early yesterday morning raided a house in Waterfalls where they arrested a man from Harare’s Mufakose suburb who ran amok on Sunday night and fatally stabbed his girlfriend’s son and seriously injured her younger daughter.
Thomas Nyamhunga fled after allegedly killing Emmanuel Tinenyasha Mauka (5) and attempting to murder Andile Tawananyasha Mauka (8) who is admitted at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital with serious injuries.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Nyamhunga was expected to appear in court soon.
“He was arrested at a house in Waterfalls where he had gone into hiding. Police raided the house at around 3am, leading to the arrest of the suspect who is in custody and assisting with investigations”.
On Monday, Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said the mother and the three children were staying at the house where the stabbings occurred.
He said the mother and Nyamhunga were in a relationship for almost two years but were not staying together.
On Sunday morning, Nyamhunga went to the house and his girlfriend then left him at her house with her children and went to Ngezi to watch a soccer match between Dynamos and Ngezi Platinum, said Insp Chakanza.
It is alleged that the two later spoke over the phone and a misunderstanding ensued.
At about 8.30pm, when the mother had yet to return from Ngezi, Nyamhunga went to bed and slept in the same room with the boy while the two sisters slept on the floor.
Investigations revealed that a few minutes later, Nyamhunga stabbed Andile in the neck with a kitchen knife and she screamed before running away from the room to another tenant’s room. Other tenants went into the room and found Nyamhunga gone after he had stabbed Emmanuel to death.
“No sound was produced by the deceased during the act but blood could be seen coming from the neck and one fingertip was completely cut from the hand and was seen on the side of the body, an indication that accused cut the finger with a knife,” Insp Chakanza said.
Nyamhunga dropped his Itel A 56 Pro cellphone near the gate of the house and it was found by neighbours. The last message was sent to his wife at around 8.16pm with unprintable words.
Police attended the scene and also visited Nyamhunga’s house but they could not locate him while his wife was said to have gone to her rural home to attend to a wedding.
Meanwhile, police in Bindura have confirmed the arrest of Marvelous Demojena Chikowe in connection with a case of murder and another of attempted murder which occurred last Thursday at Chiriseri Secondary School, Bindura in which his wife Ratidzai Mufari (43) died while another victim was injured.
Chikowe allegedly assaulted Mufari after a heated argument over an undisclosed issue. She sustained six deep cuts on the face, swollen ribs and a swollen right hand.
Chikowe then left his wife unconscious and went to a nearby house where he assaulted Albert Mawere (43), three times on the head using an unknown sharp object and he broke the victim’s left arm.
Both victims were ferried to a local clinic where Ratidzai Mufari died on admission.
Elsewhere, police in Kariba have arrested Chipengo Mpande (22) in connection with a case of murder which occurred on November 30, 2023 in which Fragment Chari (26) died.
The suspect accused the victim of having an affair with his estranged wife before stabbing him once on the left side of the stomach with an okapi knife.
The victim was rushed to Kariba District Hospital where he died on admission.
