‘Energy policy review opens path to brighter future’

In an interview, Minister of Energy and Power Development July Moyo outlined the extensive consultative process that shaped the final version of the compact. “We were in Dar es Salaam this year as we began initiating a process to get our compact accepted domestically and to gather feedback from the international community. As soon as we had our first draft, we convened a meeting in Harare with key stakeholders, including the private sector and Government entities. Over 200 participants attended our initial engagement, where we presented what our President had committed to in Dar es Salaam and outlined our intended course of action,” said Minister Moyo.

ZIMBABWE’S push towards a sustainable and inclusive energy future gained momentum yesterday as Energy and Power Development Minister July Moyo opened a National Energy Policy Review Validation Workshop in Harare.

Describing the policy review as a “strategic turning point,” Minister Moyo said the revised energy policy laid the groundwork for a brighter, cleaner and economically viable future, aligned with national goals and global energy trends.

“This gathering is more than just a review of a policy document,” he said.

“It is a call to action – a call to collectively shape the future of our energy sector to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.” The review seeks to modernise Zimbabwe’s National Energy Policy, first launched in 2012 and update it to address emerging challenges including power shortages, aging infrastructure, climate change and growing demand.

Minister Moyo said the revised policy is central to achieving Vision 2030, which aims to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy.

“Energy is a key enabler of economic growth and a vital pillar for the attainment of Vision 2030,” he said.

“The updated policy demonstrates our commitment to ensuring all citizens have access to clean and modern energy services by 2030.”

The policy promotes the expansion of renewable energy, increased private sector investment and modernisation of transmission and distribution infrastructure to ensure reliable energy supply across urban and rural areas.

It also aligns with Zimbabwe’s global and regional obligations under the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), SADC and COMESA energy frameworks.
