Renowned engineer Tawona Mtungwazi, famed for his involvement in engineering projects such as King’s Cross in the United Kingdom, JF Kennedy Airport in the United States and Joina City in Harare, has set his sights on becoming the next councillor for Ward 2 in Harare.
Eng Mtungwazi, who is standing as an independent candidate, says he is not seeking the office for prestige, but to give his expertise back to the community.
In an interview last week, the independent candidate said technocrats deserved a shot at political office.
“I am convinced that if I win, my more than two decades of experience as an engineer can make a contribution to improve not only the state of my ward in Hatfield and Braeside, but also the state of the city,” he said.
“Politics should not always take prominence over development.”
Eng Mtungwazi said he had decided to run for the council seat as he was pained by what he saw as “the ICU state” of Harare City Council.
“The city council is in the ICU because of a number of bad decisions,” he said. “The top brass at council are earning salaries that are higher than the same office bearers in Ireland, where I have worked before. I believe Harare has potential to become one of the few smart cities in Africa.”
Asked about some of the solutions that he proposes for Harare, Eng Mtungwazi had this to say:.
“For starters, if we programme our robots properly to work in a coordinated manner, you will realise that there will be much smoother flow of traffic and less congestion.”
