THE absence of England-based Zimbabwean track and field coach Stanley “Fresh” Madiri from the Sports Leaders Institute of Zimbabwe (Sliz) summer camp will not take the spark out of the administrators’ retreat.
The fourth edition of the Sliz summer camp kicks off on Friday in Masvingo and ends on Sunday.
Sliz had hoped to bring Madiri, who is rated as one of the best coaches in England after he helped a number of British athletes scale greater heights on the track under his consultancy Speed Dynamiks.
Russell Mhiribidi, the Sliz president, said Madiri is unavailable for the winter camp due to work commitment.
“We wanted to have one of our own, who has made it internationally, Stanley Madiri, to be one of our speakers. Unfortunately he won’t make it as he will be in South America. He has, however, availed himself for next year’s programme,” said Mhiribidi.
Speakers at the Sliz summer camp, whose theme is “Physical education enhancing sport, health and wellness”, include World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited doctor Nicholas Munyonga, National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) president Tendai Tagara and Zambia’s Musunsa Sombwa.
Tagara is also the deputy director of schools sport, physical education, arts and culture in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
About 330 people have registered for the camp. — @ZililoR.
