Entumbane community mourns death of centenarian, Gogo Msimanga (102)

BULAWAYO’S Entumbane community is mourning the death of one of its centenarians, Gogo Kessie Ketilina Msimanga, who died on Sunday evening at the age of 102.

She was born on September 13, 1924, and was married to Sibambo Msimanga who died on September 30, 1985.
One of her sons, Mr Mark Bafana Msimanga said while death is never celebrated, they are celebrating a life well-lived. She is survived by five children – two daughters, three sons, 77 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gogo Msimanga is originally from Marula area in Bulilima District and the family once resided in Fort Rixon, Filabusi before moving to Nkayi District.

“The secret to our mother`s longevity was her faith in God, which she passed on to all her children. She took good care of herself, ate well and was a very smart person who worked very hard. She loved worshiping God and taught us to love God and each other, as well as helping people,” he said.

Mr Msimanga said while growing up their mother was a strict disciplinarian who did not hesitate to apply the whip on misbehavior.

Despite long life, he said his mother would express a wish of resting after she reached 97 years.

“She taught us to work hard for ourselves and respect was ever negotiated. She wanted us to have quality education as she said she did not have one. She never tolerated misbehavior and bad company, wayekukatsa,” he said.

“After 97 years of age she would tell us that she was tired and wanted to rest. She did not take it kindly when she received news of the death of her age mates or the young ones. We hosted a birthday for her 100 years in 2024 but she did not realize that she had turned 100.

“From 97 she began losing her sight and when she died she was totally blind although she was able ukutotoba,” he said.

Gogo Msimanga was a devote member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church with her favourite song being ‘uJesu Uyangithanda/Jesus Loves Me’ which is number 15 in the SDA hymn book.

In a statement to the SDA Church, Zimbabwe West Union Conference (ZWUC) secretary, Pastor Taddius Nkanyezi, expressed deep sorrow over Gogo Msimanga’s death.

“Friends, it is with a sad heart that we notify you of the passing away of the mother of retired Pastor Nceku Msimanga.

“Your kind thoughts, support and love are greatly appreciated, as the family passes through this difficult time,” said Ps Nkanyezi.

“Mourners are gathered at number 30173, Entumbane, Bulawayo. Burial arrangements details, direction, and date will be shared once finalised.”

Mr Msimanga said the family was working on burial arrangements with mourners gathered at her house in Entumbane.
