Officially opening the clinic last Friday, Health and Child Welfare Minister Henry Madzorera said Epworth, despite its rapidly expanding population had one Government clinic, Domboramwari Polyclinic.
“We realised that the population had outgrown the facility and there wasn’t sufficient land for the necessary extension of the polyclinic. When MSF proposed to the Ministry that a new clinic be constructed at Overspill, we were pleased that our partnership could go beyond just the clinical treatment of HIV and TB. MSF are helping us with TB and they were best known for their quick response in the cholera pandemic,” he said.
Minister Madzorera said Government would provide 42 workers who will be trained with the support of MSF.
Speaking at the same occasion MSF head of mission Mr Paul Foreman said although the non-governmental organisation built the clinic it belonged to the community it serves.
“More than 6 000 patients have been registered at the clinic since it opened its doors in July 2011. Currently 12 864 patients are under HIV treatment in Epworth of which 9 306 are on anti-retroviral medication and 623 are being treated for TB,” he said.
