CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN has released a statement following his worrying collapse in Denmark’s friendly with Ukraine.
The former Tottenham and Manchester United midfielder fell to the ground in the 65th minute of last Sunday‘s match in Odense after clutching his chest.
Play was immediately stopped after the midfielder, who was quickly tended to by medics, briefly lost consciousness.
The 34-year-old thankfully came around and walked off the pitch thanks to the ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator), which was placed in him after his collapse at Euro 2020, kicking in.
The worrying scenes, which led to the match being abandoned, sparked fresh concerns for the beloved Dane.
And the Wolfsburg ace took to social media on Monday to insist this latest collapse wasn’t as severe as his first against Finland five years ago, which was the result of a cardiac arrest.
He wrote: “I want to let everyone know that I’m doing well and that I am at home with my family.
“As you can imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021.
“I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started.
“In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years.
“Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.
“For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation and playing football with my children.”
Five years ago, Eriksen’s life was saved by Denmark‘s national team doctor Morten Boesen.
Boesen was once again first on the scene after the Wolfsburg ace’s latest collapse.
He said: “Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the internal defibrillator responded as it should.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.
“He will undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.
“We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well.
“He asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”
Seeing Eriksen go to the ground frightened Denmark chief Brian Rieme, who said: “The most important thing is that Christian is doing well. And he has.
“He has left the pitch and has sent a greeting to the players. But that’s why the experience is still scary.” Eriksen returned to football eight months after his first collapse, joining Brentford following the termination of his contract with Inter Milan.
But this late scare will spark fresh doubts over his playing future – Sun.
