THE winds of change are sweeping through the Eastern Region Soccer League (ERSL), and they carry with them the promise of transformation, thanks to a landmark partnership with corporate giants Pacific Storm.

In a celebratory launch held at Mucheke Stadium on Saturday, the ERSL unveiled its first major sponsorship since its formation in 2001 – an unprecedented move hailed as a potential game-changer for grassroots football in the region.

To mark the occasion, football fans were treated to a spirited Launch Cup match between FC Wangu Mazodze and Tenax, with Tenax clinching a 2-0 victory to crown the festivities. The new sponsorship will see Pacific Storm, a subsidiary of Pacific Cigarettes, injecting crucial financial backing into the league, with seasonal incentives earmarked for participating clubs – a move expected to breathe new life into a region long starved of corporate support.

Speaking at the event, ZIFA CEO Yvonne Manwa, the guest of honour, underscored the broader significance of the partnership in the context of the national football agenda.

“This is a critical step for the community to realise what the football industry can bring,” she said. “ZIFA is on a drive to commercialise football, and we are telling the corporate world that there are immense opportunities and value in partnering with the footballing community. Pacific Storm’s sponsorship is a testament to the potential of the Eastern Region.”

Manwa also stressed the importance of accountability, pledging that ZIFA would lead by example with quarterly financial reports and encouraging all football affiliates to adopt the same transparency standards to maintain corporate confidence. ERSL chairman Wisdom Simba described the deal as both historic and catalytic.

“This sponsorship is very important for the region, as it will provide monetary value and incentives to all clubs at the end of the season, a first since 2001,” he said.

“It will uplift football, especially for young players who will now have extra motivation, unlike in the past when there was little support from the region in terms of finances.”

Pacific Cigarettes’ marketing manager Kudakwashe Chiutsi echoed the sentiment, expressing optimism about the partnership’s potential to unlock new horizons for local talent.

“We are excited to support the growth of soccer in the Eastern Region,” he said.

“This collaboration will help elevate competition, promote talent, and create opportunities for the next generation of athletes. We look forward to nurturing potential and fostering long-term development.”

With the ink now dry on the sponsorship deal, the ERSL stands on the cusp of a new era – one that promises growth, professionalism, and a renewed sense of purpose for clubs and communities across the Eastern Region.
