THOUSANDS of people are tomorrow night expected to attend the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Anti-Sanctions musical concert at Habane Stadium in Esigodini, Umzingwane District, in Matabeleland South starting at 6pm.

The event is a key highlight of this year’s Anti-Sanctions Day, which coincides with the Zanu-PF Annual National People’s Conference, which will be officially opened by President Mnangagwa tomorrow.

President Mnangagwa, who is also the SADC chairman, is expected to deliver the keynote address at the anti-sanctions commemorations calling for the unconditional lifting of the illegal sanctions.

The Sadc  Anti-Sanctions Day being commemorated by Zimbabwe and other Sadc countries tomorrow, was adopted by Sadc at its 39th Summit at the recommendation of the late President of Tanzania, John Magufuli and on this day Sadc and the rest of progressive world push for the unconditional removal of the illegal sanctions against Zimbabwe.

For over 20 years, Zimbabwe has been reeling under the yoke of sanctions with devastating impacts on the economy and livelihoods.

It is for this reason that Zimbabweans will gather for the musical concert in Esigodini under the theme: “Embracing Innovation, Towards Vision 2030: The Relentless Fight Against Illegal Sanctions,” where top musicians will share the stage the whole night.

Among the top performers is Jah Master, Sandra Ndebele, Chief Hwenje, DJ Fantan, Iyasa, Godolude, Jeys Marabini, Clement Magwaza, Sasha Madube, Manine, Mzoe7, Madlela Skhobokhobo, Simon Mutambi, Jah Signal, Mbare Chimurenga and Mark Ngwazi.

Acting deputy director of media services in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Mr Hym Mureru, confirmed the country’s readiness for the event.

“All is set for the SADC Anti-Sanctions gala, which will be held in Esigodini. The venue is ideal as it aligns with our goal of decentralising national events. This year, we’re focusing on rural areas to ensure no one and no place is left behind,” he said.

“Throughout the day, there’ll be a variety of activities, including the SADC Anti-Sanctions Solidarity Summit, featuring a media indaba, roadshow, cultural and music events, solidarity marches and public awareness campaigns.

“Discussions will revolve around the impact and challenges of the sanctions, which have adversely affected all sectors of our economy.

“The gala will cap off the day’s activities, starting in the evening. We expect a memorable event,” said Mr Mureru. Several performers yesterday spoke about the significance of the gala, expressing their readiness to scintillate the attendees.

Chief Hwenje, known for his popular songs, promised new music for fans: “We are ready to perform at the gala and fans should brace themselves for new and exciting songs that we will showcase there.

“I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to perform as it provides a platform for marketing us as artistes to the world,” he said.

“The Anti-Sanctions gala also offers us a chance to voice the challenges we face as a nation due to these sanctions. These sanctions have placed us at a disadvantage,” said Chief Hwenje.

Iyasa director, Nkululeko Dube, expressed excitement about the group performing at the gala.

“We’re honoured to be part of this prestigious gala, which will showcase the best Zimbabwean talent. As Iyasa, we’re dedicated to delivering exceptional entertainment that leaves a lasting impression,” he said. “Our fans can expect a high-energy, captivating show that combines our signature hits with exciting new creations.

“Our latest line-up of talented young artistes has been working tirelessly to bring a fresh perspective to our performances.

This gala promises to be an unforgettable experience, and we’re eager to share our passion and creativity with the audience.

“People should be ready to be mesmerised by the vibrant rhythms, stunning choreography and storytelling that define Iyasa’s unique style,” said Dube.

First-time gala performer Godolude also shared his enthusiasm.

“I’m thrilled to perform at a national gala. This greatly encourages me as an artiste and I promise I won’t disappoint.”

Jeys Marabini

Music legend, Jeys Marabini, fresh from a successful celebration of his 34-year career also promised an unforgettable experience.

“We’re more than ready to perform, everyone should come prepared to dance. Trust me, there’ll be extra fun at the gala. People should get new shoes because they’ll wear them out with all the dancing!”

Madlela Skhobokhobo added that his fans should expect “fireworks”:

“My band is ready to give 100 percent. We’ve added new members, including a guitarist and three backup singers, and I might even preview my new track ‘Pole Pole’ depending on the mood!”

Rising artiste Mzoe7 emphasised the concert’s significance for youth:

“As a young person, I’m excited about the future and hope to inspire the next generation. This event is an opportunity to look forward to a more empowered future.”

The concert is free hence members of the public should come in their numbers, not only to enjoy but to also express their displeasure at the West’s refusal to lift the illegal sanctions that are adversely impacting their livelihoods.
