leading Ethiopian company YTY Construction PLC is eyeing investments into Zimbabwe and is expected to bring the United Arab Emirates (UAE) brand, Chicking, for the first time.

YTY Construction PLC, founded and owned by Mr Binyam Berhane, entered into franchisee agreement in 2023 with BFI Management DMCC headquartered in UAE and acquired franchisee rights to open Chicking, which is a globally recognised quick-service restaurant brand, originally established in Dubai in 2000.

With over 300 outlets in more than 35 countries, Chicking has become synonymous with high-quality services.

In an interview, Mr Vinayak Narula, head of development, YTY Construction PLC said following the successful launch of Chicking and a duty-free shop at Addis Ababa International Airport in Ethiopia, they were looking at expanding their business to Zimbabwe.

“We, YTY Construction PLC opened our first Chicking outlet in Ethiopia at Addis Ababa International Airport in May 2024. Chicking’s target market is diverse, encompassing families, young professionals, international and domestic travellers at Addis Ababa International Airport.

“We specifically aim to attract those who appreciate high-quality food and are looking for a reliable alternative to conventional fast-food options. Our family-friendly environment, along with our innovative and varied menu, appeals to a broad demographic,” he said.

Mr Narula said for Zimbabweans travelling to other countries, Chicking provides several benefits such as quality and hygiene, variety and taste and convenience.

He said there were plans and discussions to expand Chicking to Zimbabwe along with the franchisors, BFI Management DMCC headquartered in UAE.

“Recognising the potential of the Zimbabwean market, we are exploring opportunities to bring our unique dining experience to this region,” Mr Narula said.

“Our goal is to establish a strong presence and cater to the local demand for high-quality fast food. While specific plans and dates are yet to be finalised, we aim to establish our presence in Zimbabwe within the next few years.

“This will be part of our broader strategy to expand our footprint across Africa, bringing our delicious meals to a wider audience. We, YTY Construction PLC, are in the process of conducting a comprehensive market analysis to understand the preferences and needs of Zimbabwean consumers.”

Mr Narula said the process included evaluating potential locations in key urban centres such as Harare and Bulawayo, where there is a high concentration of their target demographic.

He said their expansion strategy will involve a phased approach, starting with flagship stores in major cities to establish brand recognition and build a loyal customer base.

Mr Narula said the initial outlets would serve as a benchmark for further expansion into other regions of the country.

“We are also considering partnerships with local suppliers to ensure that our operations support the local economy,” he said.

“This includes sourcing fresh produce and other ingredients from Zimbabwean farms and suppliers, thereby creating jobs and fostering community growth. In terms of timeline, if all goes according to plan, we expect to open our first outlets in Zimbabwe within the next 12 to 18 months.

“This timeframe allows for the necessary preparations, including staff training, infrastructure setup, and marketing campaigns to introduce Chicking to the Zimbabwean market. Chicking’s entry into Zimbabwe is not just about opening new stores, it is about bringing a unique dining experience that combines quality, flavour, and exceptional service.”
