MANCHESTER CITY have let an entire team of stars worth nearly HALF A BILLION pounds leave this summer.
It is a major transition period for the Etihad club right now.
After ten years in the dugout, the club bid an emotional farewell to Pep Guardiola.
His former assistant Enzo Maresca returned to the club he helped win the Treble just three years ago. But the squad tasked with winning a first Premier League crown in three seasons looks very different from the one in Guardiola’s last campaign.
In fact, it is possible to make a full XI up once expected exits are confirmed before the transfer window closes on Tuesday night.
And adding the fees City paid for them up together, the grand total comes to £475.2m.
In goal, James Trafford only returned to City from Burnley a year ago for £27m — but has left again in a £40m deal to Leeds.
In front of him is another member of England’s World Cup squad.
John Stones arrived for £47.5m and was a tremendous servant for City over the years but was released when his contract expired — meaning he played for England despite being unemployed. Fellow defenders Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake were signed for £15.1m and £41m respectively.
Akanji made his loan move to Inter Milan permanent while Ake joined Fenerbahce for £8.5m. The makeshift defence is completed by £45m Kalvin Phillips—and admittedly he has only left for Sheffield United on loan, rather than sold or released this summer.
But this is his fourth loan since 2024 and even though he has two years left on his Etihad contract, it is clear he is not part of the plans and will almost certainly not play for Man City again.
The midfield three is pretty heavyweight, though, with main man Rodri heading to Barcelona.City sold him for £65.4m —£2.9m more than they paid Atletico Madrid for him in 2019.
The other two did not last long at all.
Nico Gonzalez is expected to complete his switch to Newcastle for £52m—a £2m profit on the midfielder City bought in February 2025.
And Tijjani Reijnders lasted just one season between his £46.5m arrival from AC Milan and £52m exit to Al-Qadsiah.
Two of the front three are swapping the north-west for North London.
Savinho was a £33.6m signing from sister-club Troyes in 2024, seen by many as the Riyad Mahrez replacement, but left for Tottenham in a whopping £85m deal.
Omar Marmoush is set to make the same journey, despite only arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £64m deal in January of last year.
And the final member of the departing XI is Bernardo Silva.
The Portuguese playmaker spent nine years at City following his £43m transfer from Monaco in 2017 – and signed a two-year contract at Real Madrid as a free agent.
The staggering list of departures has been somewhat offset by the £234m of incomings – most of which went on £116m man Elliot Anderson and £81.4m teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi.
And that figure could increase by another £100m-plus should City land Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, too. —Sun.
