THE last match of the Euro 2024 quarter-finals was set to be decided last night. Netherlands impressed to end Romania’s run in the tournament and book their last-eight place, where they will face the winner between Austria and Turkey.
England squeezed into the last eight by defeating Slovakia on Sunday, courtesy of a late Jude Bellingham strike before Harry Kane’s extra-time winner. They will play Switzerland after their comfortable win over a disappointing Italy side. Portugal booked a match with France last night having been taken to penalties by plucky Slovenia and Les Bleus only avoided a similar route past Belgium thanks to a late own goal.
Spain have made themselves arguably the new favourites to win the Euros having strolled through a tough group before scoring four goals against Georgia in their last-16 tie. But hosts Germany awaits in the quarters after they knocked out Denmark in controversial circumstances. The draw for the knock-out stages is pre-determined, leaving the road to the final in Berlin clear for each team.
